Don't Lose Your Marbles

John Bielek, has been demonstrating papermaking, papermarbleing, and bookbinding during living history weekends on South Main Street in St. Charles for about the last 12 years. He has researched and recreated the 18th and 19th century tools, paints, and materials used for these traditional trades. His work is exquisite. He has presented workshops at a long list of historic sites including Deerfield Village and Mount Vernon and is an artist in residence at Dollywood every October.

On Saturday, May 22 John will conduct two two-hour paper-marbleing workshops in the Log Church located in the 400 block of South Main Street. Participants will be introduced to the art of marbling, guided through the process, and will create their own marbled greeting cards to take home. He will also have finished products for sale. Classes begin at 10:00 A. M. and 1:30 P. M. The fee is $45 at the door, $35 in advance. Attendance is limited to 8 participants per class. Bring a work apron and old shoes.

Do you have a collection of fun and unusual found objects or just some "cool" old junk that you think would be fun to put into something functional? Have you always wanted to make your own hand-bound leather journal, book, or album? Join Gena Ollendieck and learn the technical skills of leather book-binding along with the creative exploration of incorporating manipulated and reclaimed found objects into a books' cover. The techniques of sewing a multiple signature book, attaching a hard cover, using leather to cover the book block, and various leather techniques (i.e. inlaying, raising, embellishment, etc.) will be covered. You will come away having created a hand-bound leather book personalized with your own found objects.

Gena Ollendieck is a graduate of Central College in Pella, Iowa with a BFA in Art and Education. She is a full-time practicing mixed media artist and has been selling and exhibiting her work for the past 12 years. Her books and mixed media collages/assemblages are created using a variety of found, reclaimed, and discarded objects. The book-making technique used is a fine leather binding technique creating surface embellishments that are able to incorporate a variety of objects. Ollendieck has taught numerous book-making classes at the high school and college levels, as well as at various private venues.

Class fee is $340 (This includes ALL material to make your book: e.i. binding board, 80 # acid free Stonehenge paper, headband, adhesive, and leather!) You are only responsible for the found objects you want to incorperate into you book and end page papers.

An “artist in training” since childhood Annie Smith Piffel spent her Saturday mornings drawing along with Jon Gnagy’s art show. She considers “plein air painting to be a slice of heaven.” Annie's work in pastels, oils, acrylics and watercolors range from realistically detailed still lifes to vibrant abstracts.

She encourages her students to create, imagine, explore and play. She hopes to ignite their passion and feed their spirit through their own art making process.

Spritz Me, Baby...Mo' Bettah!" Diffused Watercolor Effects

Finding merit in the "less is more" concept and the power of imprecision, this class focuses on the soluble properties of markers and other water-based media to achieve watery effects using rubber stamps. (This technique was a national winner in a recent contest sponsored by Tsukineko, Inc.) Bleaching out imagery on black paper, then re-introducing color with high contrast accents is also tackled to achieve startling effects. Runs approximately 4 hours. Some experience in stamping suggested. Includes handouts and a large supply of instructor-provided supplies. Raincoats are optional. (Just kidding!)

We will fiddle around with principles of figure/ground relationship as we integrate Ranger Color Wash Dyes and Luminarte H2Os, collage, stencils, and stamps on Oriental and watercolor paper with remarkable results. Suitable for small or large format work, this visual play time will add miles to artistic efforts! I would like to give you an update on what will be happening here at Rock Paper Scissors during this most festive time of year...it would probably help if you grab your calendar, a slide rule, and a chart of the periodic table of elements.

OK - here are the store hours: we will be open December 22 and 23 from 11-6, and December 24 from 11-3. We will be closed December 25 - Merry Christmas Everyone!! Then our SALE begins. And when I say SALE I'm saying it loudly (thus the caps). Everything (stamps, ribbon, paper, ink, books, nifnaw, etc) will be on sale at an appealing 30% off. I have said this before, and I'll say it again - the less inventory I have, the less I have to count and the less tax money I have to hand over. I have to admit that I get a not inconsiderable amount of glee from paying less tax. The SALE hours are as follows: December 26, 11-6, closed the 27th, SALE - December 28-30, 11-6 and the 31st from 11-3. The store will be closed January 1-11. We will reopen for a fabulous New Year of business on Tuesday, January 12th.

Three is a magic number...

Let me start by apologizing for the wordiness that will follow. Sorry.

I have three announcements and no photos.

First - Rock Paper Scissors is celebrating its 4th year in the biz (pause for cheering), and as such we would like to have a sale. Partly as a thank you to all of you fabulous people for being such steadfast patrons. And partly to clear out some of the current delightful products to make room for the new, even more delightful products (you know we have space issues...). So - Friday, October 9th and Saturday, October 10th will be sale days here at the shop. As it is our 4th year, you will be the recipient of one fourth off of your purchases on these days (that's 25% off for those of you who, like me, have discovered that they indeed are not smarter than a fifth grader).

Second - some of you may have noticed the "For Sale" sign on the porch at 833 South Main Street. I have had breathless (thank you stairs), panicked people insisting that I absolutely cannot close - life would lose all meaning if Cavallini paper were not available when the yen hits. Never fear, only the building is for sale. I will reference the aforementioned space issues and stairs as factors in the decision to look for greener pastures. We have our eye on a different building further down on Main Street. I don't want to jinx anything by blurting out the actual address (I don't know about the Midwest, but in New England when you run around blurting things out pell mell, jinxes ensue like nobody's business...) We'll keep you posted.

Third - as you all know there are never enough hours in the day, especially the days leading up to a jam packed holiday season. And so, I have made the somewhat selfish decision to change the business hours here at the shop. Beginning now, the hours will be as follows: Tuesday - Saturday 11:00-6:00. You may have noticed that Monday is conspicuously absent. Well, let's not say absent so much as rife with opportunity...for me...to get stuff done...that would be the selfish portion of the program. BUT - I will be open until 6:00pm now, so if you need to swing by after work, we'll be leaving the light on.

In the tradition of Batik on fabrics, students will experiment with their own hand-dyed batiked paper using stamps as tools for the resist, and also wax on the last step of the dye process to accent with small striations like real batik fabric. Origami Club at Rock Paper Scissors

This month St.Charles will join the ranks of major metro areas across the U.S., including New York, San Diego, San Francisco, LA and Phoenix,with the launch of its very own origami organization. The new group will be affiliated with the national paper folding group organization, Origami-USA. Founder Dawn Tucker is a member of O-USA and has also started a folding group in St.Louis. "Ordinarily there wouldn't be two groups so close together," states Tucker, "but people have expressed an interest on both sides of the Missouri River."

Origami is the ancient Asian art of paper folding. Today origami is practiced and enjoyed around the world by young and old alike. Origami books are available in most libraries and book stores, with several recently published books attesting to the current popularity of this versatile art-form. "Type 'origami' into your search engine, and you will get thousands of sites to peruse," Tucker encourages. "The variety and complexity are endless."

The new organization in St. Charles will meet at Rock Paper Scissors, an eclectic art & craft supply shop on historic South Main Street. "Corey Dankocsik has graciously invited the group to meet in the shop's workshop at no charge," says Tucker.

The organization is open to both novice and expert folders, and will be free to attend."It's a club, not a class," states Tucker,"so we'd like everyone to take turns leading the group in folding origami models as soon as they learn them. We will take turns teaching each other, and learning together." Children 15 and under must be accompanied by an involved adult.

First let me apologize to all of you who traveled to Rock Paper Scissors in the last few days only to find it mysteriously closed. We have been experiencing a series of unfortunate events that began with the complete, irretrievable loss of the C drive on the store computer (for those of you who are not members of the geek squad, this means all my inventory, software, and sales have gone to the nether regions - taking my sanity with them...) and progressed to a particularly virulent strain of stomach flu (I'll spare you the sordid details). We are still trying to work through some configuration problems on the computer but we have come up with Plan B.

So - Rock Paper Scissors will open again on Friday, January 2 at 10:30 and we will continue our 30% off sale through January 10th. On a purely selfish note - the less inventory I have the less I will have to re-enter...just saying.

This charm first showed up on The Creative Underground Charm Bracelet, it was smaller in size, to be intermingled with 30+ other artists charms.
From that Angela Cartwright had an idea for a "Linked By Art" necklace and asked me if I would like to participate,"You bet!" I said,and I decided to create a larger version of the original
CU bracelet charm,for the necklace that was to be photographed and published in the Belle Armoire(Sep/Oct 06) issue.
